More about Dr. Brad

Brad currently lives in Desert Hot Springs in an adorable tiny home he named Santosha. He is completely content there. One day after hiking and meditating among the Joshua Trees, an inspired Brad wrote: “I feel like I’ve always been here, dwelling in the sun, sand, sky and stone."

My Story

Brad holds a doctorate (EdD) in educational leadership and management, a Masters (MA) in Counseling Psychology, specializing in yoga as a treatment for women’s mental health issues, and a BA in Behavioral Science (a blend of individual psychology and social anthropology).

Brad has also earned certifications as a Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy Practitioner, an Ayurveda and Yoga Wellness Advisor, a Yoga Siromani and
Yoga Acharya (Sivananda yoga lineage), and advanced certification as a Feng Shui Consultant from the American Feng Shui Institute.

Brad is registered with Yoga Alliance at the highest level to provide yoga teacher training and continuing education courses (E-RYT® 500, YACEP®). He also holds a current California multiple subject teaching credential which qualifies him to teach any subject to students from pre-school to the adult level.

For the past 40+ years, Brad has worked as a classroom teacher, workshop leader, yoga and meditation instructor, curriculum content writer and a counselor in private practice. He’s taught students of all ages a wide variety of subjects in public schools and in charter schools in California and Texas. Brad began his tutoring practice in 1984 at the Academic Skills Center at Notre Dame de Namur University (known then as the College of Notre Dame).

Brad has facilitated retreats and created workshops on topics relating to spirituality, sexuality, psychology, healing and teaching methods in California, Hawaii, North Carolina, Minnesota, Florida, and China. Brad conducted his first retreat in Big Sur, California in 1984 on the topic of spiritual self-discovery. Very groovy.

To earn his doctorate, Brad conducted research on teaching pedagogy while working as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher in a pioneering bilingual school in Beijing, China. His dissertation study investigated the most effective teaching methods to teach conversational English to native Chinese speakers.

Brad’s research for his MA in Counseling Psychology in 2004 investigated the physical and psychological effects of yoga practice on body image in women. The title of his thesis was Beautiful Transformations: Body Image Changes in Women Who Practice Yoga. Brad began his private counseling practice in 2005. He has also led, facilitated and participated in men’s groups since 2006.

To broaden his scope of practice and his understanding of deeper levels of psychosomatic healing, Brad became a certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy practitioner in 2007 and has served clients all over the US—from Duluth, Minnesota to Belmont, California—in that capacity as well.

Brad began his yoga practice (Bikram) in 1979 and his meditation practice (Zen) in 1983. Brad has passionately practiced and taught over 20 different styles of yoga and meditation for over four decades in 40 different countries and all 50 states. His most recent yoga/meditation offering was integrating crystal bowl sound healing into his restorative yoga classes at Yoga Health Center in San Carlos, California.

Just for fun, Brad enjoys writing and presenting ideas playfully and formally. He has written five math books for children. His academic and scholarly writing have been published in professional journals and his poetry presented in university publications and spoken word poetry slams. He is also an award-winning essayist.

Brad has appeared on television as a Conflict Resolution Specialist, on HGTV for his gardening collaborations with landscape architects, and was featured in an educational DVD about Tantric Yoga. He loves being active every day; his heart sings when he’s outdoors and in wild places.
